The East Palo Alto YMCA is a new 32,000 square-foot building located
on a 2.5 acre parcel. It is a branch of the YMCA of the Mid-Peninsula.
The building includes space for the City's community services department,
a community meeting room, wellness center, youth center, and a teen
center. The project was designed using the LEED for New Construction
rating system with the goal of achieving a LEED Silver certification.
It will be the third YMCA nationwide to achieve LEED certification.
The project features a variety of green materials and design strategies,
including an Energy Star-rated "cool" (reflective) roof, as well
as recycled-content and low-emitting materials. The building has
been designed to be highly energy efficient and is expected to have
energy savings of at least 37.5% beyond California's Title-24 energy
code requirements. Additional green features include waterless urinals
and low-flow bathroom fixtures, a ChildWatch playground surface
that is made of recycled tires, and the use of FSC certified wood
for a minimum of 50% of the project's wood-based materials.
