William J.
Worthen, AIA, LEED AP, is the Vice President of Simon &
Associates, Inc., a nationally recognized green building consulting
firm. The firm has consulted on numerous LEED® certified projects,
including some of the earliest projects to achieve LEED certification
in California. Bill focuses on the practical application of sustainable
design and construction strategies. He brings over twelve years of
experience as a project architect and in construction administration
to his work as a green building consultant. Bill advises on LEED and
sustainable design and construction practices for clients including:
Tishman Speyer, MGM Mirage, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission,
Shorenstein Properties, Beacon Capital Partners, the Transbay Joint
Powers Authority, The Energy Foundation, and Walgreens.
In addition to his work at Simon & Associates, Bill also is
the American Institute of Architect's Resource Architect for sustainability.
In his role with the AIA, Bill serves as a subject matter expert
on sustainability to identify, guide and facilitate smooth access
to information, knowledge and practice tools for architects. He
will also develop and implement the AIA’s multi-year plan on sustainability
and building science performance in collaboration with volunteer
leaders and AIA staff.
Bill is a member of the AIA California Council, a member of the
USGBC's LEED Implementation Advisory Committee (IAC) and a member
of Lawrence Berkley National Labs Cool Cities Advisory Board. He
also sits on the San Francisco Mayor’s Green Building Task Force
and has advised California’s State Attorney General on green building.
Bill served on the American Institute of Architects San Francisco
Chapter Board of Directors and was the appointed sustainability
liaison for the 2009 AIA National Convention. He has written a chapter
on Green Policy, Permitting and Politics for a new Wiley textbook
on the Fundamentals of Sustainable Building Design (Spring ‘09 publication).
Bill is a licensed architect in Washington, DC and the State of
California, and is a LEED® Accredited Professional. He received
his Bachelor of Science degree in Building Science from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute. |
